.: How the
CAB works to influence social policy

Unemployment, debt and
home repossession are just some of the problems
faced by many of the people of Anglesey every
day. As job insecurity becomes more widespread
and wages or benefits fail to cover the cost
of living, more and more people are facing difficulties
Ynys Môn CAB helps
people to tackle their problems head on, with
advice, information and practical support.
As well as working with clients
to sort out their individual problems, the CAB
works to change services and policies which
are failing.
By talking to our clients,
we can find out where improvements could be
made to national and local social policy and
services.

Nationally, the CAB Service
lobbies MPs and AMs for better legislation, whichever
political party is in power. It has achieved change:
helping to make services like water and the telephone
more affordable for people on low incomes, and getting
unemployed people treated more fairly by the benefits
system. The Service has also secured changes
in employment law to protect people who exercise a
statutory right, lsuch as requesting a pay slip, from
losing their jobs.
Locally, bureaux have been involved
in work such as encouraging council departments to
improve the standard letters they use, for instance
on council tax and housing benefit. By providing the
clearest possible information to the public, a lot
of their problems can be avoided. Through their national
network, the bureaux share examples of best practice.

The
Legal Aid Franchise |
| The Legal Aid Board (now the Legal
Services Commision) has recognised that 'not for profit'
organisations such as the CAB as well as Solicitors
practices had expertise in fields such as Welfare Benefit
and money advice as well as housing, employment and
immigration. |
| As a money saving exercise, and to
improve client accessibility tolegal help, these organisations
were invited to bid for franch.ises in various fields |
| Ynys Môn CABs bid was successful
and now has a franchise in Money Advice and Welfare
Benefits at Holyhead, Llangefni and Amlwch as well as
offering a home visit service when needed. |
| Clients eligible for legal aid help
,i.e. those who fall within a certain financial category
can obtain free confidential, impartial and independent
advice in money and welfare benefits issues. |
| Once we have ascertained your eligibility
at our open door service you will be referred to the
relevant caseworker |
